What is Aadhar Card ?
Aadhar Card or Aadhaar Card is a 12-digit unique number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) by taking a person’s biometric details such as iris scan and fingerprints, and demographic information like date of birth and address.
Why you must have an Aadhaar Number or Aadhar Card ?
You need it to avail subsidies, to get a gas connection and file an income tax return. It could also become mandatory when applying for a driver’s license and when enrolling in college. In other words, it is the prefect identity document one can have. Currently it is mandatory to link your Aadhar Number with Bank Account and mobile number. Since June 2017, the government made the Aadhaar card mandatory for opening bank accounts and for financial transactions above Rs 50,000.
Who is eligible for Aadhar ?
According to The Aadhaar Act, 2016, “Every resident shall be entitled to obtain an aadhaar number by submitting his demographic information and biometric information by undergoing the process of enrolment.”
Remember that here residency is defined as follows :- “An individual who has resided in India for a period or periods amounting in all to 182 days or more in the 12 months immediately preceding the date of application for enrollment.”
